The Best Musical Theatre Performances of All Time, As Suggested by YOU!

Earlier on this week, I took to Twitter to ask everyone what their favourite performances of musical numbers ever were, simply because I was feeling curious. What I didn't expect was a list of almost 50 suggestions in response to such a broad question. So, today, I thought I'd sit down and take a chunk of those performances and turn them into a comprehensive list of all of your opinions...

"The Glamorous Life" from A Little Night Music by Audra McDonald - @shaunycat
This was a performance suggested by me! One of my favourite performances of a song ever is when Queen Audra performed this hit Sondheim song at his 80th birthday celebration. I had always found this song to be chaotic and infuriating before I saw this performance, delivered with such depth and exquisite storytelling ability by Momma Broadway herself.

"I'm Breaking Down" from Falsettos by Stephanie J. Block - @theatricaz
This song was pretty unknown before the latest revival of Falsettos, namely because it wasn't present in the original version of March of the Falsettos from which act one of the expanded musical is based upon. When the new cast album was released, I fell in love with Block's performance (as I always do - she's amazing) and this song fast became one of my favourites from the show. And it seems like the same happened for Caz, too!

"A Little Priest" from Sweeney Todd by Michael Ball - @LiamNathanNicks
When Liam suggested Michael Ball's performance in Sweeney Todd back in the West End many moons ago, I was immediately transported back to the wonderful night I saw the show. This production - which transferred from Chichester to the Adelphi in 2012 - was perhaps the best revival of a musical I have ever seen and I still listen to the cast album regularly to this day. Ball's performance was not only stunning, but Staunton's was too and this song is a prime example of their masterful work, which won both of them Olivier Awards.

"Gimme Gimme" from Thoroughly Modern Millie by Sutton Foster - @LucPDF13
Sutton Foster is one of my top three favourite people of all time, so it would be criminal to not feature her on this list, so I'm so glad that Luc mentioned her in response to this question. This stunning performance that he mentions, which Foster gave on the Rosie O'Donnell Show (morning television!) and which won her her first Tony Award, is just as hard-hitting as it was the first time you watched it. Sublime!

"Being Alive" from Company by Bernadette Peters - @PaulTwinn
This is one of my favourite songs of all time; Company is my joint favourite musical of all time with A Chorus Line and Miss Saigon; and Bernie is one of the greatest performers to have ever lived. So of course this performance had to make it to the list! It's totally legendary.

There are so many more amazing performances that I could've squeezed onto this list, but these are my personal top five that were on the thread. Some more options for you to look at, are...

And there are countless more options over on the Twitter feed!
